Private Kintsugi workshop

One on one Kintsugi ceramic mending workshop with Yoko Kawada

  • 150 Australian dollars
  • 7 clovelly road, randwick

Service Description

Yoko Kawada has partnered with local ceramicist Batch Ceramics to present an exclusive opportunity to learn the art of Kintsugi, the Japanese technique of upcycling damaged ceramics. This workshop for one person or a pair embraces a zero-waste ethos with a focus on appreciating the beauty that can be found within imperfection. This private session is designed for the challenge of repairing larger pieces. You can select your larger piece upon booking. There may also be scope to make a simple repair on your own broken ceramic piece (this must be discussed with Yoko prior to the workshop). About Kintsugi: Kintsugi - golden ceramic mending - is the century-old Japanese art of repairing broken or cracked pottery with natural lacquer (Urushi) and powdered gold, giving a new life to items that would otherwise be thrown away. The mending process takes days or weeks, and requires the mender to slow down, be patient. It is almost a meditation. The Art Kintsugi method follows the principles of traditional kintsugi, step by step, using alternative materials such as resin and gold brass powder, which are more accessible and enable the completion of the process within one workshop. Kintsugi is an expression of Wabi-Sabi philosophy, an embracing of imperfection, whilst appreciating the artifact’s history and the owner’s personal memories. Instead of disguising the damage by bringing the item to its original state, kintsugi emphasizes the blemish by decorating the broken lines with golden resin. The object’s life does not simply end – it is revived with the Japanese mentality of “Mottai Nai” (don’t waste). When: Thursday 3 September, Thursday 10 September, Thursday 17 September. Where: Meet at 7 Clovelly Road Randwick at 10:00. Cost: $150 for one person, $300 for 2 people. You get: A 3-4 hour Art Kintsugi workshop with Yoko Kawada, including all materials, one large ceramic to repair, tea and refreshments. NOTE: This workshop is not suitable if you are pregnant.
